FAUNA: Animal spirits, Primal nature, healing through connection with animals
Today’s message is to stop avoiding the depths (WATER) for fear you’ll drown (DEATH/WATER). WATER is a symbol of emotions, and today the Spirits are spotlighting emotional depth. We’re taking our cue from the fish folk (WATER/FAUNA) archetype of the Mermaid – human above, fish below. Metaphysically, fish are symbols of wisdom and knowledge in many world cultures, and most of those cultures have Mermaid folklore. Humans are naturally ill-equipped to explore the briny deep where fish thrive, which partly explains the appeal of the Mermaid. She is adaptable, being capable of enjoying the sand and the sea. How is this done? Balance and self-awareness. Let’s consider the water’s surface as neutral. Above the surface is thought. Below the surface is emotion. The Mermaid knows when to dive deep, and when to come to the surface. This is how we can avoid drowning in the briny depths of emotions. Emotional depths are where our greatest fears lie – rejection and abandonment for example – but even deeper below that is where our greatest treasures reside – unconditional love and freedom. Many people fear going deep in an emotional sense because once they reach the level of vulnerability where fear resides, they feel as if they’re drowning and return to the surface, never going deeper past to find the treasure below. The Spirits are reminding us that it’s ok to come back up to the surface, find a rock to rest on, and enjoy a deep intake of oxygen and some sunshine on our face. But if we want the treasure, we must descend the murky waters again.
